arch 28th 2001 was a very important day for the city of Athens since it was the first day the International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” started working. The new airport is among the best and safest in the world and the main aviation junction for South Eastern Europe.

“Eleftherios Venizelos” has gained many awards of excellence, initiating a new era for Greek aviation. IATA declared 2009 as the worse year in aviation in the last 50 years with an average of -7.3% flights for Europe. The Athens Airport turned out to be the only one among the big European airports to show increased flights (16.2 million passengers - 210,000 flights) and a record of 6.1 million passengers in domestic flights. The same year, “Eleftherios Venizelos” offered direct flights to 113 destinations (80 international) in 52 countries by 70 different airlines.

Besides its contribution to safer flights in general, Athens Airport offers high quality services to passengers and staff, and promotes the cultural life of Greece by exhibiting our special heritage. Within the airport grounds there is an exhibition dedicated to Eleftherios Venizelos and a display of archeological findings. There are also modern designed passengers’ service and waiting areas, 8 VIP rooms offering special parking and transportation services, excellent shopping areas, banks and ATMs, playground for the children, parking lot of 7,160 places both for short and long-term use and a lot of nice bistros and cafeterias serving coffee and excellent meals. Next to the airport building there are luxury hotels, an older and a new Exhibition Centre and a Commercial Park.
